Choosing Consumer Credit Counseling Services

58

By Debt Guru

If you are concerned about your financial situation - whether the biggest issue for you involves your mortgage, credit card debt or medical bills - turning to consumer credit counseling can help you to understand your situation and to take control and start managing your debt. However, despite the fact that there are numerous credit counseling services out there, it is important to make sure that you are choosing the right provider.

What you will find when you start looking into credit counseling services is that there are some providers who are affiliated with a larger entity that has established financial standards and ethical guidelines for the way that they do business and others that just make promises. You will find that some agencies operate on a for profit basis - they make money by offering consumer credit counseling - while others are non-profit organizations that are designed to help educate members of the community.

Likewise, there are some agencies that provide educational resources, classes and counseling so that those who are taking advantage of them will be able to learn to avoid making similar mistakes in the future. There are agencies that will simply work with you so that you can develop a sound strategy for reducing your debt and reaching your financial goals and there are going to be other companies that focus on contacting your creditors in an effort to help you to manage and repay your debt.

Consumer credit counseling agencies are not all the same. Some are geared to those who have taken an inventory of their income and expenses and are simply looking for the chance to avoid going into debt; others are designed to help consumers who are thousands - or tens of thousands - of dollars in debt.

When you make an effort to look into consumer credit counseling services, you are going to want to be sure that you understand what services you will be receiving. You also need to know what the fees are for those services and, if there are, when those fees are going to be collected. You need to be sure that the services that you receive are going to help you to become debt free and to reach the financial goals that you set for yourself.

If you have been struggling with your debt for an extended period of time or you simply want to be prepared for retirement and are looking for a way to manage your credit wisely, you will find that there are services designed to meet your needs. By asking questions, getting answers and knowing that you are comfortable with the consumer credit counseling services that are provided, you will find that you are a step closer to reaching your goals.

Ultimately, that is why you are looking for the services to begin with: you want to be sure that you are able to control your finances. Shouldn't you make an effort to know that you're choosing a consumer credit counseling program that will help you to reach your goals?

I have to agree with the article. The fact that you should take carefull note of who you go to.

This is advice that many people should have been advised when they approached credit card firms / banks etc.

Great stuff

For many credit counseling can be a good debt relief method however for those really strapped in debt, debt settlement may be a better choice.

Nice hub. I appreciate the info regarding choosing a credit counseling service. I know that not all credit counseling agencies are created equal, and it's nice to see somebody else trying to spread the word. People definitely need to know what they're getting themselves in to, regardless of how necessary it is to get some help.

Yes. It is good that you point out the difference between the charity and the subsidised and profit making counselors who will tend to push the use of the provider who pays them, after all this sort of advice can be vital should you get into difficulties financially with credit.

You have really put your heart into this post, and thanks for compiling such a useful post. Sometimes accessing all this information in one place can be a struggle on the net, and you have done a great job. This hub will certainly come in handy to thousands of people out there seeking debt advice. It's amazing how many financial institutions out there are willing to give out debt and yet the information on how to manage debt can be scarce and unclear. Thumbs up Debt Guru, you have lived up to your name!

(PS: Debt Guru, I have come from TK but used the wrong username, gave my email instead which is incorrect. Rarestone1 is my username)
